Join Ember’s fast-growing team shaping policy in Australia to reduce methane leaks from coal mines, a major climate change threat

We are looking for an Australia-focussed Climate Policy Advisor with experience of climate and energy topics to run end-to-end Ember’s Coal Mine Methane (CMM) team’s activities in Australia, with deep support from Ember’s existing CMM team based in Europe. Knowledge around methane is a plus, but not essential: we’re looking for an experienced policy expert and campaigner with a track-record of making a policy impact.

Coal mine methane is a huge neglected area in climate policy, and consequently it has enormous potential for the largest and fastest reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions. Ember has already made a major international impact in drawing attention to the methane crisis from Australia to the European Union; with your help we can make a serious dent in global emissions.

Following the success of our international work on coal mine methane abatement, Ember has identified Australia as a core target area for expansion. In June 2022, we published a report titled “Tackling Australia’s Coal Mine Methane Problem” followed by a report showing that cutting emissions at Australia’s coal mines can deliver two-thirds of its commitment in the recently signed Global Methane Pledge.
In parallel Ember were working with policymakers and other campaign groups to promote policies and legislation on reducing methane emissions in Australia.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced person to lead Ember’s CMM related work in Australia. You will need to have a proven record and hunger for making change in the region. This is a remote post, but you would need to be based in Australia, ideally in Queensland, New South Wales or Canberra (Australian Capital Territory). Ember currently has two team members based in Australia, who are focused on accelerating the green transition in the power sector.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead on Ember’s research and advocacy work on Australia’s CMM emissions from active & closed coal mines, promoting its measurement, reporting and abatement
  • Lead on influencing state and federal government bodies to pass legislation and policies to reduce methane emissions
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively with Australian campaigning organisations (Lock the Gate, Sunrise Project, Oxfam, WWF, etc) working in this field
  • Coordinate responses to coal plant openings/extensions and developments in coal regions
  • Campaign for changes regarding CMM regulation and emissions reductions targets
  • In collaboration with other NGOs, participate in environmental approval processes regarding the opening of new coal mines or extensions
  • Encourage coal companies to measure, report and verify their methane emissions Development of op-eds and reports
  • Work with Ember’s CMM team to see how momentum in Australia can be embraced in peer countries, including China

Must have

  • Minimum five (5) years working in relevant positions for a climate think tank, NGO, foundation or other organisation working in Australia
  • An effective networker with an established network in Australia’s energy and climate space
  • Knowledge of climate, energy and environmental politics
  • Able to work independently and effectively in spoken and written English. Such as writing articles and reports without supervision
  • Passionate about reducing global greenhouse gas emissions
  • Confident working remotely with a broad range of people, from different countries and time zones

Nice to have

  • Experience of working with anthropogenic methane emissions (coal, oil, gas, agriculture, biogas…)
  • Experience of developing policy or campaigning in the policy field
  • Experience of managing communications campaigns, supported by a network in the media
  • Fascination with data and data visualisation

Salary & contact

  • Salary: AUD$70,000- $90,000 (GBP £40,000 - £50,000) dependent on experience
  • Contract: Contract of 24 months. Full time (35 hours), subject to a 3 month probationary period.

Working at Ember

Ember is an independent energy & climate think tank, using data to drive down carbon emissions from electricity generation and to phase out coal. We gather, curate and analyse data on the global power system – and use our findings to improve energy and climate policy.

You’ll be joining us at a period of rapid growth, and be part of an innovative team that’s having a global impact in tackling climate change. We are also a founding member of Subak, the world’s first non-profit accelerator that scales climate impact through data, policy and behaviour change.

We are especially keen to encourage applications from people underrepresented in climate change analysis and campaigning. Climate change is a race issue, a class issue, and a gender issue. We welcome applicants with lived experiences of these issues.
