Canada is slow to rid itself of remaining fossil fuels
More than two thirds of Canada’s electricity generation is already zero carbon, largely due to a high share of hydro power. However, moving away from remaining fossil fuel generation is happening very slowly, with its share falling only from 20% to 17% between 2015 and 2021.
Despite the country’s head start on zero carbon electricity, in recent years Canada lagged behind peer countries on two critical pieces needed to achieve a 100% clean power grid: reducing coal use and ramping up wind and solar capacity.
Canada has committed to phasing out coal for electricity by 2030, but there is some risk that this could be offset by expanded fossil gas generation. Ambitious action is now needed in the short term to achieve the government’s goal of a decarbonised electricity grid by 2035 for a pathway that limits global heating to 1.5C.
