Gas is fueling Egypt’s rapid growth in electricity production

Egypt generates almost all of its electricity from fossil gas and oil (90% in 2020). Electricity production is rising rapidly, driven entirely by increasing fossil gas generation. Renewables made up 10% of the mix in 2020, with 3% from wind and solar.

Egypt is the largest fossil gas generating country in Africa, responsible for 42% of Africa’s gas generation in 2020. It is also the third largest gas generator in the MENA region.

Egypt has not yet made a net zero commitment, and is in danger of missing its existing target for renewables making up 20% of the electricity mix by 2022. A rapid scale up of renewable energy is required to reduce Egypt’s reliance on gas and meet its own renewables targets.
