Nuclear dominates Ukraine’s electricity generation with slightly more than a half share. The country also has the third largest coal fleet in Europe, with coal accounting for one fourth of its total power generation in 2021.

Ukraine’s non-hydro renewables share in power generation reached 6.1% in 2021 thanks to threefold and tenfold increases in wind and solar installed capacity respectively over the course of the last five years. Hydro’s share of power generation (6.8%) is at similar levels to the other renewable sources. 

Following coal phase out announcements by the government and DTEK, Ukraine is expected to phase out coal between 2035-2040. The country will need to accelerate renewable energy deployments in order to replace its coal power capacity. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has now made all of this uncertain.
