Despite a rise in wind generation, gas still dominates
Argentina’s electricity transition has begun. Wind supplied 9% of Argentina’s electricity in 2021, up from zero in 2015. Coal supplied only 3% of Argentina’s electricity in 2021, but gas supplied 61%.
This reliance on gas is at odds with its neighbours, bar Bolivia – Brazil has 12% of its electricity from gas, Chile 20%, Uruguay 14% whilst Paraguay has zero.
Will Argentina sufficiently use its extensive wind resources to meet new electricity demand and start to reduce its dependence on fossil gas? The IEA Net Zero Roadmap states that non-OECD countries like Argentina should target 100% clean power by 2040 to align with 1.5C.
