Despite recent progress, Türkiye still lacks ambition in energy transition
Türkiye tripled its share of wind and solar in power generation between 2015 and 2021. At 13.6% share in 2021, this places Türkiye in fifth place for wind and solar among G20 countries. On the other hand, Türkiye did not deploy enough renewables to meet its power demand surge in the last ten years.
The country generates around a quarter of its power through hydro under normal conditions, but in dry seasons this declines to less than one fifth and causes a sharp increase in fossil gas generation.
Coal accounts for a third of total power generation. Despite Türkiye’s 2053 carbon neutrality target, there is no coal phase-out date or commitment not to build new coal in place yet.
